Sustainable Development Research Group

The idea of sustainable development has grown over the years through different environmental movements. It is defined as:

Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainable development refers to the idea of environmental, economic, and social progress and equality. However progress toward sustainability has been slow for the majority of the people in the world still live on less than two dollars a day, 1.3 billion people live without access to water, and 2 billion people live without access to electricity. One of the main problems is that sustainability is expensive to implement and poorer countries lack the infrastructure, human capacity, and ideas to do so.

Our goal as part of the Erasmus group is to improve sustainable development within countries by focusing on millennium goals four, five and six. These goals strive to improve health care for mothers, decrease child mortality, and stop the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS.
